I've been to dozens of countries, and only had my camera stolen in one and finger broken in two (same finger!).
I was raised to never be afraid to ask for help. My grandfather used to always say: "The worst they can say is 'no.'"
Fortunate for me (and for reasons I'll never understand) locals said "yes" more often than not to boating me around Burmese festivals, biking me through the dusty backstreets of Phnom Phen or letting me sleep in their guest hammock when there was no room at the inn.

The last one did end up costing me half a bottle of bourbon.
